Source Code Conversations Ep. 9 - MyBetter.cloud
00:00

Hi everyone and welcome to Volume 9 of Source Code Conversations

This episode we’re delighted to welcome back Paul McAdam, our Director of Cloud Services to discuss our new productised service, MyBetter.cloud.

Thanks for giving us your time, let’s get into the conversation.

Guest Introduction

Matt Webb: Paul, welcome back to Source Code Conversations, your fourth visit! For anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, mybetter.cloud is officially live. So, in simple terms: what is MyBetter.cloud?

Paul McAdam: MyBetter.cloud is a cloud cost visibility and optimisation platform built specifically for SMBs, first for Microsoft Azure, and we can support AWS.

SMB invoices can be tens of thousands of lines; we re‑present that complexity in a clear, simple, actionable way so teams can prioritise savings quickly. Importantly, it’s not a cut‑down enterprise tool, it’s built from the ground up for SMBs.

Matt Webb: So it’s purpose built for SMBs, not another dashboard overload.

Problem & Why Now?

Matt: A lot of organisations either know they have a cloud cost problem and aren’t acting, or worse, they’re not even thinking about it yet. When they do, choice overload kicks in. What’s the real challenge you’re solving?

Paul: Enterprise FinOps tools can create complexity on top of complexity. SMBs don’t need 250 dashboards; they need the right few insights that tell them what to change today and how to change it. We package the data in a way that makes sense and we stand behind it with a money‑back guarantee: if we can’t help you find savings beyond the subscription, you get your money back. And pricing is fixed, not a percentage of your spend, so it doesn’t feel like a tax for using the cloud.

Matt: So you’re removing risk and overwhelm at the same time.

Paul: Exactly. SMBs get massive bills with arcane line items. One real example: a “trial” logging feature quietly flipped to paid after 90 days, and logs piled up, storage plus service cost, month after month. You only spot that by trawling spreadsheets and knowing the jargon. Most small teams don’t have the time or a dedicated analyst. That’s precisely the gap we fill.

Will Costs Slow Down?

Matt: With migration momentum and AI services spinning up everywhere, do these cost challenges go away without intervention?

Paul: No. Cloud is how modern SMBs build spin up, test, ship. Costs won’t vanish, they’ll compound as you add services. The smart move is to establish a baseline now, understand what you’re paying for, watch the month‑on‑month movement, and judge what’s creating real business value.

What Makes MyBetter.cloud Different?

Matt: There are native tools and third‑party options. Why choose MyBetter.cloud?

Paul: Three things:

  1. Built for SMBs: Simplicity first, no dashboard overload.
  2. Actionable: Not “2+2=4,” but “you only need half of this, here’s why, and here’s how to fix it.”
  3. Better decisions: See what’s switched on, where you’re overspending, and where investment matters most, plus fixed pricing and a savings‑back guarantee.

Matt: And as an SMB ourselves, we’re building by an SMB, for SMBs.

Paul: Exactly. We’ve priced it so owners can actually absorb it and if it doesn’t save beyond the fee, we refund. No one wants to learn six months later they saved “20 quid.” This is about meaningful savings.

Who Is It For?

Matt: Could you define the sweet spot. Who is the ideal user of MyBetter.cloud looks like and who would really benefit from it?

Paul:

  1. SMBs with 50-500 devices. It could be a range of devices such as servers, databases, or cloud‑hosted workstations.
  2. Primarily Azure we can also support AWS.
  3. Teams without a dedicated cost analyst. If you’re very frustrated with you cloud bill we definitely want to talk to you. If you want to dive into the nth degree, you’re probably the in‑house analyst already. If any two of those points describe you, let’s talk.

Savings & Reinvestment

Matt: Is this just about saving or also funding what’s next, like Microsoft Copilot?

Paul: Both. Don’t auto‑debit your budget into a hyperscaler’s account. Optimise, then reinvest into productivity like Copilot, licensing right‑sizing, forecasting, alerts, cost‑of‑next‑workload planning. The more we help you save, the more you can put into what moves the business forward.

What Next?

Matt: Do you have a view on what people can expect next and, you know, where you see the service going, perhaps moving forwards?

Paul: More proactivity: forecasting for finance, real‑time alerts when something changes, and ultimately anomaly detection that can pause and notify so the platform helps prevent surprises within hours, not months. But with so many SMBs still not touching this topic, step one is simple, get started, save money, and build confidence.

That wraps up our conversation with Paul on MyBetter.cloud.
